Deacon Nick Senger has over thirty years of experience in Catholic education. He started his career teaching junior high language arts and religion, then moved into the roles of vice principal and technology director before becoming principal of St. John Vianney in July of 2018.
Deacon Senger is a passionate advocate for Catholic schools, and has written several articles for the National Catholic Educational Association. His writing has appeared in Momentum magazine and in Dynamic Catholic’s Teach Lead Serve training program for catechists and Catholic teachers. He has presented at two national conferences and is one of the cofounders of #CatholicEdChat, the largest Twitter chat for Catholic educators in the world.
Deacon Senger has an unwavering belief in the power of Catholic schools to transform lives. He believes that Catholic education is rooted in the Good News of Jesus Christ, is nurtured in a community that worships together, and comes to full fruition when it produces servant leaders who change the world. He also believes that when each member of a Catholic school community has a personal encounter with Jesus Christ each day, there is an enthusiasm, a hope, and a communal spirit that permeates the hallways and classrooms. In a thriving Catholic school, “the joy of the Gospel fills the hearts and lives” of those who work there and attend there.
Deacon Senger earned a B.A. in History from Gonzaga University and an M.A. in Teaching, also from Gonzaga. In 2001, he was named a Distinguished Teacher of the Year by the National Catholic Educational Association.
He and his wife Brenda have four children. Deacon Senger was ordained to the diaconate in 2012, and he is currently assigned to St. Peter Parish in Spokane.
He loves reading, writing, and cheering for the Zags and Mariners.
